How many tens?

WE are revising this concept again.  This time we are looking at the tens and units to make up a number.  We started off checking out how many tens each number has and then added the units.

We built towers of ten to show how many tens each number had and the other buttons were the units.

From here we moved on to see what units we need to add to 10 to make a number.  For example: ‘HOw many units do you need to add to 10 to make 14?” ‘Answer 4’.  From this we could see that this equals to the sums 10+4=14.  We take it for granted but for the children they are two different sums.
